Reflection paragraph on sources
Overall, I found sources that were very reliable for my topic. I did not use any blogs, essays, or journal entries. The source I used the most in my project was pamf.org because it showed me all of the effects on teenagers from watching television and it gave a very good description about each effect. The sources I found to be most trustworthy were the ones that ended in “org”, “net”, or “edu” not “com,” which are most of my sources. They were reliable because they had authentic evidence to back their argument up. The source I found to be most biased was yale.edu because the author was talking about their life story as well as having research to back up her argument.

Reflection on process
There were some easy parts to this process, but there were also some difficult parts to this process as well. The easiest part about this process was finding the background, finding pictures for my picture and caption citations, and the beginning of my blog when I first started to talk about my topic. The most difficult part of this process was actually finding reliable research and putting it together. The posts that I found most difficult were the finding paragraphs, and the quote, summary, and source analysis citations. Overall, this project was easy for me to handle. I liked decorating my blog and proving my point through various ways throughout this blog the best out of anything. I liked that I got to talk about a topic like this and prove my point. I disliked actually finding all the research and putting it all together in my paragraphs. I would definitely do this project again because it was a fun, new way to do a research project. I really connected with my topic and I found myself more and more interested in it as I went along with my project. If I had to do this project over again, I would try to find more research on my questions and answer my other questions that I had for this topic. Other than that, I would not change a thing of what I have done in my blog.
Wordle #2
In this wordle, I used twenty-five words that I felt were the most powerful during my research. I made words like teenagers, children, media, television, brain-washed, stop, and reality big because they were the main words that I used the most and felt were most important. As you can tell by the words in my wordle, teens and children watching television is a very bad thing.
Reflection paragraph on findings
During this process, I have sound a myriad amount of research about my topic. I learned the effects on teens and children from watching television, how it will affect them into adulthood, and which type of show has the most negative impact on them. The most important facts that I learned throughout this process were the different types of effects that are put onto teens and children when they watch television. I had no idea that watching too much television can affect your abilities in school. The most surprising fact that I have found throughout this process is that kids can be so violent and mean from watching violent television shows. It actually encourages children to go out and bully other kids, and sometimes even murder them! I still have a few questions about my topic and they are the following: Besides money, why do the media keep these negative shows when they know that it is putting a negative influence on teens and children? Should we ban television? And how would that affect people? These are not my main questions about my topic, but I was curious about them. I feel even stronger about my topic now than I did before. Now that I know more information about it, I believe that this is truly a problem and I want to help solve it.

Findings Paragraphs #3
There are many types of television shows, but reality television has the worst effect on the youth today. Some types of reality television shows are Jersey Shore, America’s Next Top Model, American Idol, The Real World, Parental Controls, and so many more. (Reality TV Shows) These shows are bad for adolescents today because they show “real people” who have perfect bodies, faces, personalities, and relationships. Teenagers actually believe that these people are what reality is and they will try anything and everything in their power to be like them, no matter what the consequences are. According to Laurie Hibberd, reality shows cost on average $400,000 rather than $2 million for a dramatic series. The only reason why the media keeps reality television is because it is the cheapest show to make. They do not care whether or not it affects kids today. (The Impact of Reality Television on Viewers' Perception of Reality) “The advent of cable and MTV has also altered their habits.” (Television and Teens) This quote from the article Television and Teens explains that MTV (a reality television station) has changed teenagers’ lives in a bad way. Just because the media is selfish and does not want to get rid of these bad shows, does not mean that teenagers and kids should be watching these vulgar shows. We need to educate the youth today about the effects of watching reality television and to show them that these shows are bad for them.

Findings Paragraph #2
Television has a major effect on the youth today as they go into adulthood. Watching too much television can cause diseases, a lack in education, and obesity. One of the effects television has on the youth today is that it can cause diseases, such as ADHD. Researcher Professor Werner Halperin suggested that the brisk changes of sounds and images on television may engulf the neurological system of an adolescent can cause attention, personality problems, and ADHD. These diseases will carry on with them throughout their life. (Health Effects of Excessive TV Watching by Children) Another effect that television causes children into adulthood is a lack in education. It is proven that television's effect on education in the youth today are long term. With the youth always watching television, their grades decrease and some decrease so much that they will not even graduate from high school. Students will not have education to go onto college and get a degree in a field. It is proven that watching more television in childhood increases the dropout rate and that can also prevent teens from getting a degree. (Television (TV) and Children: Your Child) Last but certainly not least, another effect is obesity. As I explained in my other paragraph, watching television can cause obesity problems and if kids are not active, they are more likely to become obese as an adult. It is much harder to lose that weight as an adult rather than losing it when you are an adolescent. 65% of Americans are obese and television has impacted them in some way to become obese. (Media Usage in Teens) These effects are long term and they will impact the youth today into adulthood.

Finding Paragraphs #1
According to researchers, 90% of teenagers between the ages of 13-17 watch television as soon as they get home from school. This percent is higher than any other activity that is available. (Teen Leisure Habits: TV Still On Top) Television has many affects on youth, and most of them are negative. Those affects are obesity, lacking in school, stereotypes, violence, watching advertisements and commercials, and sexual activity. Obesity is a problem because when kids are watching television, they usually are eating food and they do not realize that they are eating so much. It is proven that if you watch more than two hours of television a day, you have a higher chance of being obese as an adult. Television has an affect on school work as well. The youth today who watch television have lower vocabularies and have lower test scores. People usually shown on television are not realistic and they are stereotyped against. Kids and teenagers today believe that the skinny and beautiful people on television are actually how people are and that is not true. Violence plays a big role on youth today. A study has shown that if four year old's watch violent television, they have a greater chance of becoming bullies in middle school and high school. Advertisements and commercials are targeted towards children, and it works because children of the ages 12 and under convince their parents to spend $500 million a year. (Teens and the Media) Sexual activity has also increased since teenagers are watching television. Professionals encourage parents of teens to be involved in their teens lives because it is proven that if they do, the rate of sexual activity in teens decrease. This means less teen pregnancies and diseases. Television has a very bad impact on youth today and it needs to be fixed. (Study Points to Health Effects of Television on Teens)

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5
Author's Quote: In the 1970s, the late researcher Professor Werner Halperin suggested that the rapid changes of sounds and images on TV may overwhelm the neurological system of a young child and cause attention problems that show up at a later date. Around the same period, Dr. Mathew Dumont of the Harvard Medical School suggested that the rapid changes of TV sounds and images may stimulate a child to mimic that dynamic behavior. That is, what we call ADHD may simply result from the child subconsciously copying the frenetic pace of TV programs.
Paraphrase: A researcher has suggested that the brisk change of everything on television has engulfed the neurological system of an adolescent child and cause problems with their attention span later in their life. Another researcher from around the same time had a similar idea. He suggested that the quick changes of television’s noises and images may encourage a kid to copy that vibrant behavior. Television can very well be a reason why ADHD in children exists.
Summary: This article explains how ADHD can be one of the affects from watching television. Also, years ago when children did not watch so much television, their manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination was so much better because they were actually active. Now, children are having trouble writing in their classes because they are lacking manual dexterity and researchers believe television is one of those reasons. This can affect children in their future in a very negative way.
Source Analysis: There is some author bias in this article. Like my other articles, it is mostly facts and research. Some of the propaganda techniques used in this article are testimonial, bandwagon, and plain folks. It is testimonial because they mention some-what famous researchers in this article. It is bandwagon and plain folks because this appeals to many children who are normal and average just like everyone else. A text element in this article is that the subtitles are red and the font is black and that means that it is an important issue and it has to be stopped before more kids get ADHD.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #4
Author's Quote:One research study found that TV's effects on education were long term. The study found that watching TV as a child affected educational achievement at age 26. Watching more TV in childhood increased chances of dropping out of school and decreased chances of getting a college degree, even after controlling for confounding factors. Watching TV at age four was one factor found to be associated with bullying in grade school.
Paraphrase:According to researchers, a study has shown that watching television at a young age can affect your education level when the child reaches adulthood. Watching television at a young age can prevent you from getting a college degree, and maybe even your high school diploma. It increases the chances of teens dropping out of school at a young age as well. It can also increase the chances of your young child to become a bully in middle school and high school.
Summary:In this article, I found that television viewing is the earliest form of media exposed to children, often before the age of two. Advertisers target kids because they are more vulnerable to things like that and that can cause the parents to run low on their money because they want to full fill they're kids wants. Children see about, on average, 2,000 beer and wine commercials each year. If kids watch a scary movie, they can develop fears that will be with them for the rest of their life. It's proven that fear can cause sleeping problems. Overall, this article provides useful information about my topic.
Source Analysis:This article barely had any author bias in it. It was based mostly on facts and research. Some of the propaganda techniques used in this article are bandwagon and plain folks, like most of the article I have been researching. It is bandwagon because it is talking about a myriad amount of kids and how they are affected. It is plain folks because it is talking about regular, normal kids having these problems. The websites I have found have the same kinds of propaganda. A text element I found in this article is that the background is yellow. Yellow means an attention getter, and it makes people lose their tempers. I think the author used this color to show that this is an important issue and they should be more willing to put a stop to this.

This graph shows that kids between the ages of 13 and 17 watch television more than they do anything else. 90% of those teens watch television. The other categories are listening to music on the radio (77%), listening to music on CDs/MP3s (76%), use the internet (60%), play computer games (37%), read a book for pleasure (33%), read a magazine (29%), read the newspaper (28%), and read a comic book (7%). These chilling statistics show that we have to put a stop to this.

Quote, summary, source analysis, and citation #3
Author's Quote:Why are networks giving such a push to reality programming? According to a recent article by Laurie Hibberd, cost has much to do with it. “Reality shows cost an average of $400,000 per hour to produce versus $2 million for a dramatic series” (Hibberd, 2002). With this vastly less expensive option and the ratings for reality programming going through the roof, every network that wants to continue doing business feels the need to market new reality shows and somehow keep America begging for more; so far this plan is working. Throughout the wide variety of all of these reality shows a common thread remains: the people starring in the shows are supposedly all regular, “real” people going through “real” situations. One has to wonder what this bombardment of “realness” must do to the viewers.
Paraphrase:Networks find reality television to be a good thing for one main reason: it is the least expensive option for a show. It only costs $400,000 an hour to construct rather than paying $2 million for another type of television show, specifically dramas. Networks think that they should keep reality television because they want America beseeching for more of these kinds of shows. Reality television shows “real” people going through “real” predicaments. Teenagers and kids do not understand that “reality” television is not really reality.
Summary: This article is all about reality television and how it is not a good thing for people to be watching, especially kids and teenagers. Americans watch so much television that they are prone to think that reality television is actually what happens. Experts believe that these networks producing reality televison are polluting our minds with disturbing and inappropriate things of reality and it should be stopped.
Source Analysis: In this article, there was some author bias because it said that reality TV produces a distorted reality, while other people may think it is the best kind of television. Some of the propaganda techniques used in this article are bandwagon, name calling, and plain folks. It is bandwagon because they interviewed many people and they were talking about how it affects the whole nation. It is name calling because they are pin pointing reality television to be the worst kind of television. It is plain folks because in their experiment, they used regular, average people. An important text element was that reality television is the least expensive show to produce and networks will not stop producing them because they are so cheap.

This picture shows many reality television shows. Reality television has been proven to have the most impact on youth. It shows them that they can do whatever the actors do and it will be okay, even if it is something that is bad such as the following items: smoking, drinkings, and being sexually active at a young age. This is not the only kind of show that has a big impact on youth, but it is the worst thing for kids and teens to watch.

Quote, summary, source analysis, and citation #2
Author's Quote:Researchers concluded by urging parents to remain highly involved in teens' lives, including keeping up to date on young people's television viewing habits and interests. In one of the study's more optimistic findings, researchers had noted that those teens who understood their parents disapproval of premature sexual activity were less likely to become sexually active than their peers who did not receive frank and open communication from parents.
Paraphrase:One of the bad effects television has on teenagers is sexual activity. Parents need to be apart of their teenager’s lives. If they are, they can help prevent bad things from happening to their teens. It has been proven by professionals that if teenagers know that their parents disapprove of them having sex at such a juvenile age; they are not as probable to have sex at an immature age as much as other youth who have not received concern and conversations from their parents about this topic.
Summary of Article: In this article, I have found a numerous facts about my topic. This article focused mostly on teenagers being more sexually active from watching television. Researchers have found that teenagers are twice as likely to have sex at a young age if they watch television a lot. This is a chilling statistic and it proves that there is a true problem. Researchers encourage parents to become involved in their teens life to help prevent the negative effects that can occur. This article was very helpful to me and provided information I could not find elsewhere.
Source Analysis:In this article, the author was not really biased. This article was based off of facts and research, not opinion. Some of the propaganda techniques used in this article would be bandwagon and plain folks. It is bandwagon because the article was talking about many teenagers going through the same problems, not just one. It is plain folks because these are normal, real families that are having issues with this. One of the text elements that are in this article is the research and statistics that are used in here. One piece of research would be that twice as many teenagers have sex if they watch a lot of television.

This picture represents one of the affects that television has on the youth: violence. As you can see in this picture, a fairly young boy is fighting against another young boy. On the page I found this picture off of, it was talking about how violence on television affects the youth today because by seeing that on television, kids will feel that they are allowed to behave in such a vulgar way. They are also unaware of the consequences. Kids do not feel that they get in trouble for getting in a fight because they see all of the “cool people” do it.

Quotation, summary, source analysis, and citation #1
Author's Quote:Studies in the late 1960’s showed six times more violence in Saturday morning children’s programming as in adult prime time. A study by the Singers of the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center supports findings concerning the deleterious effect of TV on children. Children who are heavy television viewers and who were the most aggressive in the sample watch action-detective shows, cartoons, news, and game shows. They found the hours spent in front of television and the program content is significant.
Paraphrase:At the end of the 1960's, a study revealed that weekend morning children's television exhibited six times the violence experienced in evening programs. There is a group called the Singers of the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center and they support results dealing with the effects of television in children and teenagers. Kids that watch an excessive amount of television were proven to be more belligerent when they were sampled to watch action-detective, violent programs, animation, broadcasts, and game shows than those who do not. The studies that they have done have proved that there is a significance between the amount of time watching television and what is contained in the programs they are watching.
Summary of Article:According to this article, television most definitely has significance on the youth of today. The TV Guide outsells every other magazine in the nation. Most of the professionals that work with children daily are truly concerned about them sitting for long periods of time while watching television and want to provide help to them. Television decreases the amount of time children are in some kind of active activity. One classroom teacher actually had to teach a lesson in class with puppets behind a television-looking box to get the children’s attention. According to this article, children need people the most. They need them to get them on the right path and stop watching so much television. If we just let this go on, it can ruin their lives by the time they are adults with the choices they have made from watching television. Television is not taken very seriously to some people, but it should. It should be important to everyone that television is actually hurting your teenagers and children.
Source Analysis: There was a lot of author bias in this article. She would talk about when she was a kid and how television affected her life style. Although, she has very good research that she included into this article. The different types of propaganda used in this blog are bandwagon and plain folks. It is bandwagon because she is talking about many teenagers and how they are affected. It is plain folks because teenagers are normal people dealing with the same problem all over. Everyone can relate to this issue. A text element in there is that five hours a day, sixty hours a week for millions, television is being watched all over the country.

This picture shows an example of how television affects the obesity of teenagers these days. As you can see here, there is a young teenage boy eating chips while he is watching television. He does not understand that he is eating so much because he is focused on watching the show. As you can also see, he is very obese as it is and that is because he is probably eating every time he watches television! You can clearly see here that this is a real issue and it needs to be stopped.

In this website, I found some extremely helpful ideas and facts about the media. I learned that the media negatively affects teenagers by school, obesity, advertising and commercials, stereotypes, violence, and sex. At the bottom of this web site, it gives you ways that you can stop all these negative effects from happening, such as limiting the amount of time while watching television, do not eat while watching television, do not do your homework while watching television, when you see an advertisement, think if the product is truly realistic or not, and many more helpful hints.

Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, a West Point military psychologist, says that violent television and video games play a significant role on the youth killings. They condition children to become violent without teaching them the consequences. He also wrote a book that is called On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society. He discusses the way people can overcome the feeling to avoid killings with Gloria DeGaetano, who has written Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill. According to them, thirty years of scientific studies support violent programs have a huge impact of children. While the murder rate doubled from 1957 and 1992, the aggravated assault rate has multiplied many times more.

According to this website, television can affect learning and school performance if it cuts into the time kids need for activities crucial to healthy mental and physical development. Also, according to researchers, viewers feel an instant sense of relaxation when they start to watch television. When the television turns off, that relaxation immediately goes away. Kids are bombarded with sexual messages all throughout the media. Parents are worried if it’s too much. In the 2001 study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, entitled on Sex on TV, studies have shown that three out of four prime shows with sexual references have 84% contain sexual content, 10% reference safe sex, and in the shows that have teen sexual content, 17% contain messages about safe and responsible sex.

This article provides very helpful tips for teenagers. For the problem of obesity, there are actual exercise programs on television that can help teenagers and people of all ages get active without even leaving their living room. Just sitting in front of the television for hours can cause an increase in laziness, and these programs can decrease the laziness in teenagers. This website is promoting teenagers to get up off their couch and find a hobby at school instead of watching television where problems can occur.

What I Want To Know About My Topic
My topic has a myriad amount of research to offer. Some of the research that I am determined to find is: How does the media specifically put a negative influence on teenagers? Which type of show provides the most negativity on teenagers? Besides money, why do the media keep these shows on television for teenagers to watch? Should these bad television shows be banned from television? How will the negative influences put on teenager’s impact their lives as an adult? What if these television shows were banned? How would that affect people? All of these questions will bring me one step further to finding the true problem behind this issue. Teenagers do not realize how bad these shows are for them, and it is about time they figure it out. The media should stop producing these vile shows before everything get way too out of hand for anyone to handle. I want to know the real purpose of why this issue is taking place.

What I Already Know About My Topic
I know quite a few things about my topic. I know that the media will not ban these inappropriate shows and images on television because it is all about the money. Teenagers are actually watching these shows because they are curious about these types of things and the media knows that. They know teenagers do not know any better and they think that watching those types of shows are “cool” and “in-style”. Even though the media knows how teenagers are, they don’t care because they want to make as much money as possible. In my opinion, it seems a little selfish on their part. I also know that these shows glorify all of the negative things such as drinking, smoking, pregnancy, and cursing. It almost seems like they are making it okay for teenagers to do those types of things to make them seem “cool”. That is one of the reasons teenagers do they bad things they do. That is another reason why this madness needs to come to a halt.
The Story Behind My Topic
What is it going to take for the media to see that they are putting a bad influence over teenagers and how they behave? This is a very important issue, especially to me. These reality television shows and shows that have teen drinking, teen smoking, and teen pregnancy shown in them are terrible for teenagers and young children to watch. It’s all about the money when it comes to the media. They don’t care about teenagers and how it’s affecting them. I chose this topic because I believe that it is a very serious and important topic that needs to be addressed. I have seen some of these bad television shows such as shows on MTV and The Secret Life Of The American Teenager and they are totally inappropriate, even for adults. I would not allow my thirteen year old brother watch these shows. My parents have done a great job on things like this by blocking MTV on our television. They are good parents and they don’t want their kids to be exposed to such inappropriate things. This issue needs to be put to a stop.
